Ministry is Honor

Jesus modeled the honor system of God for us to embrace. He received honor when the voice from the Shekinah glory declared Him the Son of God in the presence of men.

2 Peter 1:17
“For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'”

Jesus understood that true honor involves dying to self and living fully in the will of God. Honor, for Him, was about aligning Himself with the Father’s will and purpose on earth.

Hebrews 2:9-11 tells us,
“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone… For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren.”

The Essence of Ministry

Ministry is willful obedience rendered in humility and submission. Jesus knew that disobedience meant knowing God’s will and either turning away from it or carrying it out halfheartedly.

John 4:31-34
In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.(NKJV)

Ministry should be our food as well. Our satisfaction comes from completing it excellently and in a timely manner. Jesus is our model of honoring the Father, identifying with His will, and committing Himself fully to accomplishing it. This is how we honor God—by taking up the honor of doing ministry according to His will.

Jesus taught His disciples that true greatness in the community of saints is found in servitude.

Matthew 20:25-28

“But whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

The Path to Honor

Honor in ministry is found in humbling oneself and serving others according to the will of the Father. This kind of service not only honors God but also makes us honorable. Jesus set this example for us, as described in

Philippians 2:5-13
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.(NKJV)

Timothy exemplified this honor through his humility and obedience, setting himself apart from those who were disobedient. His faithful ministry is the true essence of honor—honoring God’s word, will, and purpose by serving others and obeying the guidance of his Pastor/Teacher

Philippians 2:19-22
But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your state. For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel.(NKJV)

Purging Dishonor

In God’s house, there are vessels of honor and vessels of dishonor. However, anyone who purges themselves of dishonor—by honoring the word and the will of God—will become a vessel of honor, sanctified and useful for the Master’s work.

2 Timothy 2:19-21

Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.(NKJV)

Faithfulness in ministry is rooted in obedience, which honors the things of God, His patterns, and His ways. Disobedience, on the other hand, is dishonor, disregarding and disrespecting the pattern of God and belittling the instruction of God.

Understanding Honor

The word “honor” is translated from the Greek word timē, which implies value or measured worth. It is the debt we owe God, reflecting how we handle His will and purpose in the lives of others.

Romans 13:7-8

“Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor. Owe no one anything…”

The word “due” and “owe” used here in the Greek are related.

  • The word “owe” in Romans 13:8 is translated from the Greek word opheilō (ὀφείλω), which means “to owe” or “to be in debt.”
  • The word “due” in Romans 13:7 is translated from the Greek word opheilē (ὀφειλή), which means “debt” or “that which is owed.”

In ministry, we are indebted to God and His church. We pay this debt by fulfilling our service to God in His word and in men according to His will and purpose.

Honoring Spiritual Authority

We must honor our spiritual authorities—our pastors and teachers—for the word and work they bring.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 and 1 Timothy 5:17-18

“Recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake… Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. For the Scripture says, ‘You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,’ and, ‘The laborer is worthy of his wages.'”

This honor extends to all saints, to marriage, and to our spouses as joint heirs of grace (1 Peter 3:7, Hebrews 13:5). We are called to honor all men.

Conclusion:

Ministry is honor. Disobedience to this call is dishonor. A lackadaisical approach to it is the worst form of dishonor. We must go beyond ourselves to honor the will of the Father in Christ.

Purge yourself of every dishonor so that you might become an honorable vessel, useful in the fulfillment of ministry.

I call you blessed.
