Honoring the word of your shepherd

The missing link to experiencing the miraculous in some people’s lives is the lack of honor for the words of their pastors. The teaching ministry of your shepherd is the channel through which God’s might operates in your life.
Reverence for the Word
Honoring the teaching of your pastor means receiving his words as the truth of God’s Word. This involves placing a deep reverence on the teachings, which will be evident in how you handle them. Reverence for his teaching will make you attentive to hearing, removing both environmental and inward noise. You will deliberately incline your ear to his teaching, listening repeatedly until you understand it as he intended, in alignment with how it is written.
1 Thessalonians 2:12-13
“That you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory. For this reason, we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.”
The saints at Thessalonica are a model of honoring the word. They didn’t despise it or treat it as mere words of men; they received the teaching of their shepherd as the truth. They believed it until it worked effectively in them, visibly transforming their lives.
The Role of Your Shepherd
When you became born again and joined the church, God gave you a shepherd whose voice you must honor. You will lose or gain on the basis of how you honor his teaching.
Acts 20:28
“Take care and be on guard for yourselves and the whole flock over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you bishops and guardians, to shepherd (tend, feed, and guide) the church of the Lord or of God, which He obtained for Himself with His own blood.”
Your pastor is a representative of Christ, your shepherd. His voice carries the message of Christ, and thus, you must incline your ear to hear him. You must receive his voice and teaching with the same honor you would give to Christ, your Bishop, and Shepherd.
1 Peter 2:25 and John 10:14, 27 state
“For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls… I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own… My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
You hear the voice of Christ, when you honor the voice of your Pastor. Jesus has set him in the local church to reveal himself through his word.
Developing the Capacity to Hear
Hearing your pastor’s teaching requires intentional development over time. Attentive hearing comes from repeatedly listening to his teachings and reading through his messages to fully grasp the intended meaning. This leads to true understanding, where sons and daughters in the faith are birthed who will go on to teach the same truths.
Luke 12:34
“Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be.”
This principle is key to hearing and understanding your shepherd. If you invest your treasures—your money and other important resources—in him and the teaching of the Word, you will naturally pay more attention, learn, and pass his teachings on to others. Your investment in him and his ministry will keep you connected, ensuring you don’t stray from the place where you’ve invested your time and resources.
As Galatians 6:6 and 1 Timothy 5:17-18 emphasize,
“Let him who receives instruction in the Word share all good things with his teacher [contributing to his support]… Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. For the Scripture says, ‘You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,’ and, ‘The laborer is worthy of his wages.'”
The Power of Honor
This principle helps the listener stay glued to the message, binding their heart to what is being taught. It cultivates a deep respect for the time and space dedicated to teaching and encourages the continuous practice of listening and meditating on the Word.
True honor involves getting the message into your heart by listening again and again, reading until you reach the same understanding as your teacher.
Ephesians 3:3-4 illustrates this, “I got the inside story on this from God himself, as I just wrote you in brief. As you read over what I have written to you, you’ll be able to see for yourselves into the mystery of Christ.”
Invest in Your Pastor’s Ministry
Invest in your pastor’s teaching by praying for him to teach accurately and for his message to spread swiftly and be glorified in the lives of others, just as it has been in yours.
Ephesians 6:19-20 and 2 Thessalonians 3:1-2 encourage us,
“Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given to me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should… Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith.”
Invest your time, financial resources, and material goods in your pastor’s ministry. This investment will connect your heart to his teachings, helping you pay attention, hear, understand, and pass on the message to others.
Honor the Word by listening attentively to your teacher, and honor your pastor by giving him such things as you have. This is the key to truly grasping and retaining what you’ve learnt or heard.
I call you blessed.
