Determinants of Spiritual Growth (Part Two)

Determinants of Spiritual Growth: Part 2

7) Participation

A lack of presence in meetings, service, and fellowship is a clear indicator that your spiritual growth is stagnant. It shows that you’ve grown weary of growth. True spiritual growth stirs within us a strong desire to participate in fellowship.

Consider the excuses given when saints are confronted about their frequent absences from fellowship—they are often flimsy and unconvincing. Moreover, such individuals quickly take offense when reprimanded.

Assess your spiritual growth by your level of participation. How often do you engage in meetings? How does your participation contribute to the fulfillment of the church’s collective mission?

Ask yourself: Do you believe your presence is vital to the progress of the church? Is your absence felt, or does it go unnoticed?

1 John 1:1-7
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen [it], and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship [is] with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.(KJV)

Participation is what the Spirit of Christ in you compels you to share with the saints. If you’re growing spiritually, it will be evident through your consistent, faithful, and fruitful fellowship with the saints.

8) Prompt Attitude to the Ministry.

The scripture speaks of the beauty of those who bring the gospel. This beauty refers not to outward appearance but to the promptness and readiness in fulfilling ministry.

Rom.10.15 – And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!”

The attitude that carries out the work of ministry is referred to as “beautiful.” This does not refer to one’s elegance or outward appearance but rather to promptness in service. The word “beautiful” in the scripture above is translated from the Greek word hōraios, meaning “belonging to the right hour or season” (timely), which by implication means flourishing or beauteous (figuratively). It implies that the work of ministry blossoms and blooms when attended to in a timely manner.

Promptness in ministry is measured by punctuality. The sin of lateness, when tolerated, leads to spiritual sleep and, eventually, spiritual death. Chronic lateness to meetings breeds negligence and unpardonable excuses that bury the potential of the saints.

God’s call and gifts are distributed promptly.

2 Corinthians 6:1-3
We then, [as] workers together [with him], beseech [you] also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain. (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now [is] the accepted time; behold, now [is] the day of salvation.) Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:(KJV)

When are we to serve others His grace? Now! Any delay will waste grace. Paul said, “Let not grace be in vain.” He also said, “Behold, now is the appropriate time to do ministry.” No dillydallying.

Satan rejoices when saints are late to meetings, knowing that they can’t be in sync with the community of believers.

9) Sectarian and Segregation Attitudes

Unchecked sectarianism and segregation in the church can turn it into a carnal gathering. Members start treating each other with bias, undermining the unity of faith and eroding the unity of spirit and purpose. This attitude eventually cripples the work of ministry. The growth system will be neglected and replaced with mere displays of impressiveness, where the strongest and the richest hold all the power.

1 Corinthians 11:18-19
For in the first place, when you assemble as a congregation, I hear that there are cliques (divisions and factions) among you; and I in part believe it, For doubtless there have to be factions or parties among you in order that they who are genuine and of approved fitness may become evident and plainly recognized among you.(AMP)

Watch your segregation and sectarian attitude; it may become your weakness, knowingly or unknowingly. Spiritual growth seeks to build a bridge accessible to all in fellowship. It is evident in the unity of purpose and spirit among the saints, both in public and private, during good times and hard times.

10) Fruitful Labor

Spiritual growth should manifest in fruitful ministry. The sign of spiritual maturity is fruitfulness. Just as sheep give birth to lambs, who in turn grow into sheep that continue the cycle of fruitfulness, so should we produce lasting fruit in our spiritual lives.

Imagine being the only born-again believer in your family for the next twenty years—even your own children could become instruments of the devil against you.

Labor to be fruitful in ministry. Use your fruits to demonstrate your maturity. Growth is evidenced by the good fruits it bears.

John.15.16 You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you and I have appointed you [I have planted you], that you might go and bear fruit and keep on bearing, and that your fruit may be lasting [that it may remain, abide], so that whatever you ask the Father in My Name [as presenting all that I Am], He may give it to you. (AMP).

Conclusion

Strive for spiritual growth and give evidence to it. Be the one to measure it according to the well-known determinants expressed in the scriptures.

If you’re comfortable in a fruitless ministry, never imparting what you know to others, it’s a sign that you’re not growing spiritually. A spiritual baby is one who, even when it’s time to teach, is still in the process of learning what they should already be teaching.

Ask yourself: Where are the fruits of my spiritual maturity? The answer lies in the fellowship of the saints.

I call you blessed.
